THE SHAMANS

From a small lake to the highest seas

A dynamic, young and ambitious team. Driven by the love and passion for the sport itself. Showing great respect for other nations, sailors and talent. They all line up behind the country’s first Olympic class world champion to prove that with proper work and effort, great results can be achieved. By participating in the SSL Gold Cup they want to put their country on the map of international sailing. They all come from one of the three sailable lakes of Hungary, but already have reached out to the world’s most important sailing events around the globe, in both Olympic and non-Olympic classes. The team is developing fast but there are still positions and roles to be defined. This is the first time in the country’s history that the possibility has arisen to group the nation’s best sailors on one boat, for one goal, against the best of the sport. No matter how much energy and effort is needed, there is no question the team will be ready when the first warning signal is blown, to compete as one for its national pride and the best results obtainable.

1928
No-one achieved better results in Olympic classes than team Captain Zsombor Berecz since the nation’s first attendance Olympic campaign in 1928.

The captain

ZSOMBOR BERECZ

Without any dispute, the captain is the best active sailor in Hungary, proven by his national (28 national championships won) and international results in both Laser and Finn classes, recognised also by its 22nd SSL ranking. Still an active Olympic class sailor today and hoping for the games in Tokyo and the survival of his beloved Finn as an Olympic class, the SSL Gold Cup is his first venture as team leader in big boats against the world’s best sailors.

The captain

THE LEADERS

SZABOLCS MAJTHENYI

Since his childhood, Szabolcs has raced in different classes, including Optimist, Cadet, and 470. However, since 1992 his full focus has been on his beloved “Flying Dutchman”, where he won 13 world and 5 European championships. Since 1997, he has also worked as a coach and he is currently the head coach of the Hungarian 470 Olympic team, preparing for Tokyo.

BALAZS TOMAI

Parallel to his Olympic campaign for the Rio Olympic games in the Laser class, (he qualified his nation, but due to unfortunate circumstances was unable to participate) Balazs got his degree in civil engineering. Even today, being an active and successful sailor in different non-Olympic classes, he also works as an engineer in major construction companies around the country.

NÉMETH ÁRON

After sailing in different Olympic classes and fuelled by his passion for the seas and oceans, Aron decided to move to Australia in 2003. He has since participated in major big boat events in the FARR40 and SYDNEY38 classes and worked on MAXIs and MINI MAXIs. Due to his international experience in these classes, he has the most knowledge in the team of boats like SSL47.

THE LEADERSTHE LEADERS

THE YOUTH FACTOR

In recent years, sailing has become an increasingly popular sport in the country. Due to the Hungarian Government and the Hungarian Sailing Federation’s joint effort, the so-called “Go Boating” program was  established, which gave over 2,000 children the opportunity to get involved with the sport. An increasing number of young sailors are trying hard to follow in the footsteps of the Captain, and we are sure that more than one will be able to make it into the team during the SSL Gold Cup campaign.
